Through my work with Otto Design & Marketing and Visual Harbor, I led the development of the award-winning Virginia Beach Department of Economic Development (VBDED) “Yes Virginia Beach” mobile app – providing critical project management support, product technical documentation, and delivery of the app. Through this partnership, I collaborated with the city technology departments in Virginia Beach and Richmond, as well as leadership from VBDED, to collect the app’s business and technical requirements.
The app’s core functionality relies on Google Maps, GIS data, and a custom API from the state that allows users to search for available commercial property in relation to business districts. The map also features the ability to turn on/off points of interest in relation to the commercial property, such as military bases, airports, schools, entertainment, and so on. To manage real-time updates to the app’s mapping data and rich content blocks, I architected a database structure and Content Management System to deliver content via JSON feeds.
